Has Google given up on the DMOZ Directory?

Google used to have a link to its version of the DMOZ Directory,

http://directory.google.com/

on their home page, along with links to "Images", "Maps" and such.

Then they moved it to the secondary page so you had to go to

Google Home -%26gt; More -%26gt; Directory.

Now you have to go to

Google Home -%26gt; About Us -%26gt; Google A-Z -%26gt; Directory

It is still there, but it is getting harder and harder to find. I have it in my bookmarks, but I teach basic Internet skills at the library, and I want to tell the beginners how to find it. The path above is WAY too complicated for beginners.

This brings up a wider question - have directories become obsolete, and is Google abandoning them?

Has Google given up on the DMOZ Directory?
It is not that Google is giving up on DMOZ, but Google keeps coming out with new products that they want to push more than they want to push DMOZ.

It's all a matter of priorities.

Reply:Both Google and Yahoo have separated themselves from their directory roots -- Yahoo's flagship directory listings and DMOZ were the most sought after pieces of real estate for all webmasters only a few years ago.

Simple search replaced directory based navigation in the same way it replaced library card catalogs. Search is more efficient, complete and all-inclusive.
Reply:Whether or not directories are becoming obsolete is subject to each individual's interpretation but Google is still listed as a site using it at the DMOZ webpage
Reply:no
